Alipay is a Chinese payment system with a variety of mini services for paying for goods and services by QR code. A suitable GoGoCard card can be attached to an Alipay profile and used to pay directly.
Important
Topping up an Alipay wallet with a GoGoCard card is not available — that operation is supported only for Chinese bank cards, for residents of China and a few other countries.
The card can be attached to an Alipay profile and used for payments, funds will be debited from the card at the time of purchase, without topping up a balance beforehand.
1. Check your card
- Make sure the card specifications state support for Alipay. You can check this for your card in your GoGoCard account → the specific card → terms and limits. GoGoCard cannot guarantee that your card can be added to Alipay if that functionality is not stated in the specifications of your card.
- Check the card balance — it must cover the price of the purchase including any tax and currency conversion, as well as a small verification authorization (up to $1).
Important
Before you start adding the card to a service, make sure your card balance is greater than $0.
2. Install the app and register
- Install the official Alipay app — from the App Store, Google Play or from the official Alipay website.
- Enter a phone number (it does not have to be Chinese phone number, any number that receives SMS will do), choose the country code, wait for the SMS code and enter it.
- When Alipay offers to specify the region of the account, specify your real region.
- Fill in your first and last name in Latin letters — exactly as in the document you are going to use for identity verification.
If Alipay requests verification by international passport for a foreign account, complete it with your real data in the Account → Settings → Identity Information section. The verification is carried out by Alipay itself; GoGoCard cannot influence its result and has nothing to do with it.
3. Attach the card
- Go to Account → Bank Cards and press Add Bank Card.
- Enter the card details from your GoGoCard account: the card number, the expiration date and the CVV code.
- If Alipay requests a billing address, use the billing address from your GoGoCard account — without changes. Even a small discrepancy in the street or the postal code may lead to a decline. Fill in the fields in English.
- Confirm the attachment.
- If an additional verification page (3DS) appears — go to the menu of your card and press the green 3DS button to find out which confirmation method is enabled for your card. Then confirm the transaction using that method.
The card has been added successfully if it is shown in the Bank Cards section with its payment system and last four digits, without the statuses "Verification Required" or "Risk Control".
To be sure that the card has genuinely been added to Alipay, we recommend carrying out transactions, including test payments, only within China.
4. If the payment does not go through
- The card will not add — check whether your card states support for Alipay, as well as the status and balance of the card, whether the details were entered correctly and the internet connection.
- Billing address error — use the information from your GoGoCard account without any changes to the spelling.
- The name does not match — the name in Alipay, on the card and in the document used for identity verification has to be the same and written in English.
- The SMS does not arrive — check the country code and the number, make sure service SMS messages are not blocked,do not request the code too often.
- Alipay asks for the CVV again during a payment — this is normal for some transactions, simply enter the code from the card details.
- The payment does not go through with a particular merchant — not all merchants and Alipay mini services accept international cards. This is a restriction on the side of Alipay or the merchant, not of the card.
- The QR code does not accept the card — personal transfers and Red Packets are not available for foreign cards; the cards are intended for paying for goods and services.
The transactions menu in your GoGoCard account should contain information about the attempted transaction (even an unsuccessful one) with the specific reason for the decline. If there is no record of the transaction, make sure you have followed all of the recommendations above; otherwise, contact Alipay support.
